Enough!

I drew my wabbit on Wednesday, he has decided to overcome his fears, those little things that we create, crippling us in life, a beast to the self. Enough!

Illustration Friday - Fail

"ARE YOU FAILING?" That is what my other half says when I fail to open airtight pots, juice cartons, wine bottles, beer bottles, cut cheese, reach the top shelf, open the door, so on and so forth... No, I'm not a very graceful person as you may have already gathered. So, armed with my spoon and a blowtorch, here I am, facing one of my foes... the jam pot!

Illustration Friday - Homage

When IF proposed the topic "Homage", I was a bit at a loss, thinking I did not want to fall into the typical medieval chap in armour rendering homage to the lady in distress (obviously after having saved her from the dragon). What do we do homage to? Artists, events, people... And sometimes to the simplest things. We have a certain type of stew in Galicia, my homeland, "o caldo", the basic diet for most some time ago, a pleasure for others nowadays. It is what my grandad has for lunch everyday, it is what we have every now and then, and I fear, that the old recipe may be lost since to have proper "caldo" you need to be in Galicia, using Galician grown "berzas". To sum it up, I did this portrait of my dad a while ago, in deep concentration before eating a spoonful of caldo, with some nice "patacas", and the old t-shirt he uses to cook, which makes him look like a grumpy Homer Simpson. This pastel drawing is quite big, and it is not hanging from any wall at home - perhaps the likeness is too scary? - but whether he likes it or not, that is him, and that's our "caldo".

Illustration Friday: Open

I haven't participated in Illustration Friday for a while... actually, I haven't even been around online for a while after a grueling month of work (7 a.m. to 9 p.m., crazy!). Nevertheless, this topic has put me back on track and I have decided to actually create something big-ish in pastel. May frame it even though Mannginger may never want to look to our walls again if I keep on filling them with this sort of paraphernalia. The Wellcome Collection's exhibition on the heart must have had some impact on me, as this was the first thing that came to my mind when reading the topic. Best thing about the exhibition? The whale's heart... you can fit a roomful of sailors and Captain Ahab's in it.

Illustration Friday: Visitors

Ah well... quality is not fantastic, but clicky on the image to check the big sized granny. This one is for those moments of man flu where no-one is around to tuck you in bed and feed you homemade chicken soup and just be generally patient with you when you are in a foul mood. Do not underestimate the importance of grannies.

Illustration Friday: Captain

That little poem we had to learn by heart for our Literature exams when we were younger... "The Pirate's Song". Can you imagine a classfull of children repeating as if it was a choir all those lines on life in the sea, sailing and privateering around the world.... This one's a doodle for Illustration Friday

Did I say it was a "little" poem? Now this is edited for those of you who really want to learn Spanish... here's the full thing...

"Canción del pirata" Espronceda

Con diez cañones por banda,
viento en popa, a toda vela,
no corta el mar, sino vuela
un velero bergantín.
Bajel pirata que llaman,
por su bravura, El Temido,
en todo mar conocido
del uno al otro confín.

La luna en el mar riela
en la lona gime el viento,
y alza en blando movimiento
olas de plata y azul;
y va el capitán pirata,
cantando alegre en la popa,
Asia a un lado, al otro Europa,
y allá a su frente Istambul:

Navega, velero mío
sin temor,
que ni enemigo navío
ni tormenta, ni bonanza
tu rumbo a torcer alcanza,
ni a sujetar tu valor.

Veinte presas
hemos hecho
a despecho
del inglés
y han rendido
sus pendones
cien naciones
a mis pies.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

Allá; muevan feroz guerra
ciegos reyes
por un palmo más de tierra;
que yo aquí; tengo por mío
cuanto abarca el mar bravío,
a quien nadie impuso leyes.

Y no hay playa,
sea cualquiera,
ni bandera
de esplendor,
que no sienta
mi derecho
y dé pechos mi valor.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

A la voz de "¡barco viene!"
es de ver
cómo vira y se previene
a todo trapo a escapar;
que yo soy el rey del mar,
y mi furia es de temer.

En las presas
yo divido
lo cogido
por igual;
sólo quiero
por riqueza
la belleza
sin rival.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

¡Sentenciado estoy a muerte!
Yo me río
no me abandone la suerte,
y al mismo que me condena,
colgaré de alguna antena,
quizá; en su propio navío
Y si caigo,
¿qué es la vida?
Por perdida
ya la di,
cuando el yugo
del esclavo,
como un bravo,
sacudí.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

Son mi música mejor
aquilones,
el estrépito y temblor
de los cables sacudidos,
del negro mar los bramidos
y el rugir de mis cañones.

Y del trueno
al son violento,
y del viento
al rebramar,
yo me duermo
sosegado,
arrullado
por el mar.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

New Plant

Flores
Originally uploaded by GranPatranha
We saw this luscious plant in the supermarket and I had to buy it! Just gave me an excuse to try out my new fab acrylic paints. I am still trying to get to grips with them as I was accustomed to using plastic paint (normal wallpainting pots, out from the tin, splashin colours directly onto the canvas). I am quite pleased with the watercolour effect even though composition and the rest are quite amateurish. Ah well... practice makes perfect.

Sofa Days

Sofa Days
Originally uploaded by GranPatranha
Given the very restricted nature of my real life (hah! call it "real"), Mr. Mannginger ends up being the subject / victim of all my paintings, so, hello, here's another portrait of the boy.

This time the portrait has been done in a technique new to me. Photoetching. Of all the etching techniques I have practised, this is perhaps the most puzzling one. Why puzzling? Two possible reasons:
a) I haven't completely mastered it at all, as I've only done a 3 day course, and thus, I am not aware yet of the potential it may have.
b) The detachment from the plate... One does not really work it and thus control it that much, and the final product ends up being... the same photograph!

Hullo... you'll say, silly moo, of course the result is the photograph you have been working with... may the name "photoetching" have something to do with it? Of course! But still, I think I expected more from this technique, appart from giving the photo a ragged handmade look which may be lovely, it is still not fulfilling enough, it does not seem to be my work, my etching, but just another interpretation of a more or less successful photo.

Certainly need to keep on working with this and certainly would love to see examples of successful photoetching, since, at the moment, I do not know what I can expect from this technique.

Balloon Girl

Doodle of the day / Monigote del día

Pues sí, a falta de nada mejor que hacer, aquí va el monigote del día, para los amantes de la fabada, las habichuelas, los frijoles o las judías blancas... 'Bean there, done that...'

Bean!
